How to Know if Your Water Heater Needs to be Repaired by a Plumbing Expert

Water heaters are relied on for a variety of tasks around the home, including taking a hot shower. When it stops working, it is crucial to have it repaired as quickly as possible. But, how do you know if it needs to be repaired? There are a few signs that it’s time to call for expert plumbing assistance for your water heater.

Lack of Hot Water

If there is no hot water or it runs out incredibly quickly, it may be due to the thermostats failing or the heating elements not working anymore. Having the water heater repaired will ensure there is plenty of hot water available whenever it’s needed.

Leaking

If there is any sign of a leak with the water heater, it’s important to have it repaired right away. Leaks can get worse with time and a leaking water heater can be incredibly dangerous because of the temperature of the water.

Odd Noises

Odd noises likely indicate that there is sediment building up at the bottom of the water heater. If this sediment is not cleaned out, it could end up causing damage to the water heater and the tank will need to be replaced.

Water is Rusty

If the hot water in the home has a red tint to it, there is likely rust inside the water heater. While this may be able to be repaired, it could also be a sign that the water heater is reaching the end of its life and needs to be replaced.

Temperature Fluctuates

If the temperature of the water tends to fluctuate, then there could be an issue with the water heater or with the water supply to that appliance. An inspection can determine if the water heater is the cause and, if so, what needs to be done to fix it.

Low Water Pressure

If there is low water pressure for hot water only, the culprit may be the water heater. If there is low water pressure for hot and cold water, the issue likely lies in the water supply pipes. Either way, it is crucial to have a plumber take a look and see what needs to be fixed.

High Electrical Bills

If the electrical bills have jumped since last month, but no energy use has changed, one of the potential causes is an issue with the water heater. If the water heater is struggling to keep the water hot or the hot water is leaking out, it will require a lot more energy to supply the home with hot water.

Age of Water Heater

If the water heater is more than five years old, it’s necessary to have it inspected as repairs may be needed. This is especially true if there are any other signs of issues. If the water heater is more than 10 years old, it may be necessary to replace it before major repairs are needed.

If your water heater isn’t working right, call for help right away. Fixing it now could prevent the issue from getting worse and the water heater having to be replaced. Plus, it will help ensure there is always plenty of hot water when it’s needed.
